Apparently, though, several users are troubled by such seeming miscalculations, and my manager asked whether I knew of any industry-wide standard for explaining this scenario so that I could include it in our user's guide.
The warning "Totals may not be accurate due to rounding" appears on tables in books, magazines, newspapers, etc. pretty regularly, and I think people understand what it means (although you could test your new & improved doc on some users).
But rather than include it in the doc, how hard would it be to get the developers to add that line (or a similar warning) to the bottom of each report? That way, people who see the reports but don't have the manual (could be lots of people, depending on whether these reports get distributed) won't think the numbers are in error.
