Another really, really good book that is language-independent is Code Complete,
by Steve McConnell
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1556154844/o/qid=985127659/sr=2-1/107-5192372-6438103).
I'd love to see it become mandatory reading for all new programmers! It'd make
their own job (and ours) so much easier if everyone involved in the programming
process both knew and practiced the principles.

The book was written before the popularity of Object Oriented Programming, but
that is probably its only fault. The rest of the stuff in there is timeless....
