I agree with Charles, but I may be biased as I write end-user documentation for my organization's proprietary software. I believe that anything other than present tense gives the reader a sense of ambiguity. I think its important for the reader to understand what the software is currently doing, not what they think it did or will do at some point in the future.

Just my 2 cents on the subject!
