The trick to single-sourcing PDFs and paper copies is to reverse
this tendency: that is, to design for on-line reading. On-line
design works much better on paper than paper design works on-line.
In fact, I maintain that on-line design produces a more usable paper
manual.

The one drawback I can think of is that on-line design generally
takes up more pages.
