Legal issues aside, you quickly run into translation and cultural issues if
you use recognizable names. ... MUST you use people's names? Can you substitute business-oriented aliases?

Y'know. This is actually another hopeless morass. My husband once used the strategically-altered names of deceased pets of ours and our friends (you'd never have known they were pets unless you talked to him) in a series of product reviews being published in a magazine he worked on. He was reminiscing about these animals in the office and his boss overheard.

The boss called him in and yelled at him for half an hour about how morbid it was to use deceased pets and insisted that he immediately change every single name that appeared on screen. Since there was no way to re-run all the tests, he spent hours and hours and hours touching up those screen shots using a graphics program. Of course, this introduced all sorts of consistency problems that had not existed when the tests were run. He was NOT being paid by the hour at the time.

That's another good thing about contracting. Whenever the boss comes up with another stupid project that takes up lots of your time, you can rationalize it by reminding yourself that you are being paid by the hour.
