I voted "no" as a blanket certification for "technical
writing" sounds, well, hollow. It would be like
certifying people for "programming" or for
"construction". There are so many vastly different
sub-levels to tech writing, programming, construction,
etc. that a blanket certification would be pointless.

Sure, one can argue that a writer should be certified
in the use of proper grammar, but shouldn't our high
school diplomas cover that? If certification was
offered, it would have to be so multi-tiered that it'd
be pointless anyway, as computer doc is different from
medical doc and procedural doc is different from
conceptual doc... not to mention Help authoring, Web
authoring, and all the other facets of our
professional world.

No, certification just seems like a lost formality to me.
