Ehem, Bill and friends: (clearing the California smog from my throat as I
feed the hamster that's running my PC, and push the $2.00 a gallon gas
receipt into my planner)...

If the jobs are in (a) Silicon Valley or (b) the Tech Coast [Orange County],
go ahead and send in your resume. However, be prepared to hear what I heard
early last year. "No Frame, no dice."

I know I sound like a broken record, however, reality is what it is in CA's
high-tech areas. I don't agree with it. And, I'm lucky I found my current
employer.

Let me qualify and say I don't mean to discourage those looking in either
the Northern or Southern Californian TW markets. Yes, follow Bill's advice
(and the others'). Believe in yourself, have that snazzy portfolio ready,
buff up that resume, and go for it. Just don't let it get you down if you're
turned down. Keep on knocking on those doors. Heck, you just might find an
employer like mine!! :-)

Ouch! That hamster bit my finger. Sheesh. I wish the power would come back
on.

Anyhow, my point is that people trying to break into the field should NEVER
get discouraged when seeing ads that exceed their current experience. Answer
them, and for cripes sake, be honest! None of this "Yes, I know that tool.
It's a long-time friend of the family" crap if you don't know it. I never
had to stoop that low, and I wouldn't tolerate working with someone who did.
If you say you know WhooptieDoo2000, then you'd better be able to use it
when you get hired. Be honest and relate experience to what you DO know.
"No, I don't know FrameMaker, but I have worked with various related desktop
publishing and information management utilities. If you like I can make it a
point to learn the tool prior to my start date, if considered for the
position."

So, all foam and spittle aside, my point is to not get discouraged, apply to
any and all ads that suit your fancy, and be honest. You'll like the
results. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some padded walls to bounce off.

;)
