Dear Annamrie,

1) .dot locally

Only one answer AFAIK - speed. I use a network server to hold our
"workgroup" templates and point everyone's word directly to them.
Another good solution is to have the SOE include a boot-up batch file that
copies the latest template down locally from the server.

2) docs carry templates

The document has a property which holds the NAME of the attached template.
Note that SOME template stuff can be / usually is stored in the document -
local style defs etc. So if the template aint available - its NAME is still
in the "attached template" property and the styles are set to what they last
were, sorta.

if/why is is valuable to have .dot file on one's
own computer. Obviously it would be if there was one person "owning"
styles for a project and everyone needed to be using the same styles.
Is there any other reason? How is it that MS Word "carries" the
template with the file, but doesn't actually have a copy of it?

Thanks for your expertise.
