Sorry for being so blunt, but I'm lazy too and hate doing others' work. We all have to reinvent the wheel from time to time because no two of us have the same circumstances, budgets, open requisitions, work loads, yadda yadda.

That said, here's some help anyway.

"My group of 4 full time, 1 part time writers supports 15+

client-server products, and we have little time for peer editing."

That's a powerful argument in and of itself. So each writer supports 3+ products. What's your quality control? Do you use a style guide if you don't have an editor? No style guide? An editor then would help establish a quality baseline and common "read" to your documents.

Why not try doing a search on www.google.com for "peer editing" or "writer to editor ratios" and see what comes up?
