My 2 cents worth:

When I was attending college in my early thirties, I took a job as a data
entry operator (we had an 8086 with two Bernoulli boxes!). When I was ready
to graduate, my boss asked me to leave some instructions on how to use the
database. This became my first user's manual.

After 11 years of teaching, I realized that my 19-year-old high-tech son was
making twice what I did. I had continued to free-lance user's manuals for
small firms over the years, so decided to do this full-time. Thus, I became
a "technical writer" sometime between the ages of thirty two and forty six,
but couldn't tell you exactly when!
