Here in NJ, there seem to be a few big companies that need tech writers
all the time,
and a million little companies that need us on an annual or even bi-annual
basis. I've
handled this by using one recruiter for the "biggies" so I can say on the
phone, "I already
have a recruiter that handles Dow Jones and AT&T submissions, and another
one for
Telecordia. Please don't submit me for any jobs at all for those
companies, and contact
me about others."

Then, when I'm actually job-hunting, I keep a careful log of companies
I've been submitted
to so that I can weed out doubles.

This has helped me to avoid getting submitted twice for the same opening,
and has also
(I think) made recruiters more likely to cough up the company names. I can
say, "Okay,
if it's none of those, let me have the name so I can add it to my list so
that no one else will
be able to submit me." They want to avoid duplicate submissions as much as
we do.

Asking the company name may require a bit of negotiation, but basically by
the time you get to that point in the process where you both feel you're a
good match, the recruiter shouldn't have a problem giving you the name of
the company, or at the very least ruling out companies you're already in
the process with ("This job isn't at Company X, Y, or Z, is it?")
