<Screeners have rejected my resume outright because it has no past position
titles that explicitly state "Technical Writer". They have (admittedly)
regularly ignored summary and accomplishment details that provide qualifying
data. This moves me to re-think and sway from the recommended resume
formats, but you can't please everyone.>- Dave Stewart

I agree with you about the "screeners." I have been fortunate to
at least get a few interviews at great companies because the
hiring managers wanted to be contacted directly instead of letting human
resources handle it. Your comment makes me wonder if I'm getting
ignored because of the lack of that "Technical Writer" title.

I have been asked, "Sooooooo...you have never had the title
of...Technical Writer (puzzled look)?," after I completed writing
tests that they swore were excellent, brilliant, better than the "rest,"
and on and on. I guess they knew that their Human Resources
Department may have a problem with that. I don't know.
I'm still waiting to see if I am the right "fit" after going for a second
interview. *fingers crossed*

I recently graduated from an MA program in
Technical and Professional Communications and have had several
internships and assistantships that gave me writing experience, but none of
them allow me to give the job experience the title of Technical Writer.
However,
I have several writing samples from course work on my Web site and I let
them know what types of writing I have done in my cover letter. My writing
samples include proposal writing, documentation plans, software tutorials,
employee safety
procedures, and online help.Yet, if they only flip through my work
experience "titles,"
they'll never know what I have to offer. Sad indeed.

Ohhhhh, maybe one day I'll be asking you all questions about
how to solve a problem with FrameMaker or RoboHELP instead
of problems with the resume submission/interview/hiring process.
However, it is a great discussion for all of us, from entry-level to
senior-level. It seems we all have faced some "unrealistic" job
expectations from employers at one point or another. ;-)
