Re: Interviews: Where do you see yourself in 5 years
This and "what are your long term goals" are my least favorite questions.
My impulse is to say-living, gainfully employed, or something equally
facetious such as Ruler of the Free World.
I'm not a hugely ambitious person. I've found something I like to do that I'm pretty good at, and it has a lot to do with my feelings of self-worth. When asked that question recently (couple times in March, before I got this job), I was able to say truthfully that I enjoy doing documentation, learning new tools and skills, working on various projects and with different people, and taking on different challenges, but that at my (advanced) age (44), I am not very excited about promotion, or lateral moves to other positions where there is more chance for promotion. I'm already the senior documentation writer here (and the only one, heh heh).
"Where do you see yourself/want to be in 5 years?" That's a question for kids I used to babysit, not for middle-aged persons. The wise interviewer won't ask it, or will frame it in a different way. It must be on that Secret List of Interview Questions, where "So who is <your name>?" used to be. (I'd always stare dumbly at that one. "Didn't YOU call ME?")
I would LIKE to be a retired lottery winner, but to get there I'd at least have to buy a ticket once in a while.
