Sometimes, only a 2X4 works.

"Mr. X..on several instances, you've distorted facts and taken a path
to resolve a perceived problem that only caused friction,
waste-of-time, and bad feelings, when a direct discussion would have
solved your problem faster, not have created one for my boss, and
made me more willing to work WITH you. What is the root of this issue
so we can address it here and now to both our satisfactions?"

When he mumbles his response, say "I'm sorry, I didn't hear
that...could we try that again?"

I've handled things this way (including with management) and while
those situations usualy turned out for the better, any resolution to
cut it off is better than the alternative of having it go on and on.
