<<I have a computer science degree from Xavier
University (1996). >>

That should be a plus. My understanding is that there are lots of folks
out there with excellent WRITING skills, but limited technical
knowledge.

<< I became very ill when finishing up school, and spent
the last five years essentially bedridden. I have completely recovered
and
I'm a picture of health, but I have nothing to show for the last five
years
professionally, >>

Accounting for long periods of no activity on a resume is indeed a
problem you must know how to deal with properly, but I think you had
best seek the advice of a career counselor,

<<I'm looking at software documentation jobs, and wondering what skills
I
should concentrate on improving. >>

Well, as you suspect, you should take some kind of technical writing
course. Myself, I went through the graduate program at Drexel
University in Philadelphia. Knowing all the tools like Word and FM and
RoboHELP is certainly an asset, but you gotta know what constitutes good
documentation.
