My psychology professor seems to think that giving something a possessive is
anthropomorphism. (Anthropomorphism is not allowed in psychology research
manuscripts.) I don't know if I agree with him, but he is an editor of a
peer-reviewed psychology journal, so there may be something to it...

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Yeah, he is the one in charge. It has to do with clarity. If it is clear with the possessive, keep it. Otherwise re-write the sentence.
