Ann,

I don't know how they would look in a Windows toolbar, but on
my father's lawnmower, they used the tortoise and the hare
(one like the running rabbit in the Visual Quickstart books) to
denote speed settings. Those two images seem to be easily
identifiable. I don't know if they would be understandable for
other cultures, but most people are familiar with the story.
