Has the developer considered using sliders on the interface to control
speed and volume?

I don't think speed is a concept easily translated to a toolbar button.
There's a tendency in user interface design to try and make a toolbar
button for everything, but that often results in a toolbar full of cryptic
little pictures that users can't interpret without relying on docs or tool
tips. Imagine if the designers of cars felt they had to pair up every
function with a little 16x16-pixel button... we'd all be crashing into
trees while we were scrubbing the mouse over the interface trying to figure
out which button meant "brake."
