Wonderfully put, Bill. (see William Swallows's post.)
In fact, I agree with your points.

However, who will gain the greater economic benefit?

1. The cook who demands unicorn meat (seeks time with users).
or
2. The cook who finds ways to makes shoe leather palatable
(works within the system).

I know the choices are not so closed-ended as that. One can
work within the system and try to improve it. The numbers
suggested by the poll, however, indicate that the economics
of customer contact do not lead to tech writers interacting
with users.
