There may be more MA programs, but it isn't like PhD programs don't
exist. (There are likely more history or biology MA programs than PhD
programs too.)

A list I have dated 1998 shows 39 PhD programs in applied communications,
15 in communication education, 56 in communication theory and
research, and 33 in critical-cultural/media studies.

That said, it is unfortunate that research centers like the ones
Karen Schriver (CMU) or Ginny Redish (AIR) were involved with are no
longer in place. But they are/were not the only place that communication
research is/was organized.

Also, I wonder if it is an issue for TC, unlike many other fields, that
there is
such competition for such research (when you consider IEEE, STC, SIGDOC,
and ATTW, among others).
