Hi Betsy -

As someone who *likes* being a contractor, I always feel a little uneasy
when people say this sort of thing. When the Microsoft perma-temps started
to rebel a while back, I thought "Oh no -- don't spoil this for the rest of
us!"

Keep in mind that your job is not typical of TW contract
arrangements--normally when you're a contractor, you get a higher hourly
wage to make up for the lack of benefits. I'll take the higher wage over
the paid-vacation-and-free-health-club-membership kind of deal any day. I
think what your new employer is doing is rather unethical because they're
taking advantage of a bad job market to drastically underpay you. (Wait a
minute... you mentioned a recruiter. I wonder what kind of cut they're
taking on this deal. It's conceivable that the company may be offering a
more reasonable amount but the recruiter is taking a big chunk of it.)
