Nothing...that means you need to judge the scale of that "ABOUT." Sounds
to me like some people think $22,500 is too big of a jump. Okay, make the
jump smaller. If you're worried about that, then say "ABOUT $40,000" then
you're only $7,500 off from your previous salary. But, you're not going to
make $55,000 then.
The point is - if you want to get more, up-bid yourself. Trying to beat
around the bush with loquacious justifications as to why you deserve more
won't stick. You need a raw, quick number so you can start haggling.
Also, since when did it become illegal or unethical to want more money? If
somebody told me they wanted $50,000 and made $32,500 in their last job, I
might spot them for their daring nature and counter with $40,000.
Oh my god - an candidate that is trying to make more money! Its a crime,
call the FBI, get the greed-sniffing dogs! Come on, its expected folks.
You're not a liar because you want more money. You're just greedy - and
what is more American than greed?
Lying is when you purposefully tell somebody incorrect information. Being
vague is when you work inside a range and avoid specifics. Just because
you think the range is too big - doesn't mean it then becomes a lie.
$22,000 is nothing if you think of how much most CEOs make.
