Two things:

1) Where did this person state that they wanted to become an English Lit professor? They have a Masters in Tech Writing. So why are you even addressing the concept that there are more Tech Writing teaching positions than English Lit positions??? Have they even *hinted* that they're interested in English Lit?

2) Having gone through the lengthy and grueling process of applying to and being accepted into a number of English Lit PhD programs, I'm slightly appalled that the person who wrote this original message apparently has no clue as to what PhD program to consider. Programs obviously vary widely, depending upon many variables, and it takes a lot of thought and a lot of time, among other things, to pursue PhD program acceptance.

I'm skeptical on your view that there are more opportunities as a professor
in English lit. than in tech writing. The money in the private sector is far
too tempting for many would-be tech writing professors, leaving some schools
hurting to find enough good quality faculty. At least that's what I've
observed and heard from my little corner of the world.

At any rate, anyone with aspirations of becoming a professor, especially an
English lit. professor, *needs* to read this page; "Thinking of Pursuing a
PhD in English?" from SIU, Edwardsville (in Illinois)
