My thought was: Is there a technical writer who doesn't either use Word or
know where to get a copy of it? There are many libraries, colleges,
Kinko's, etc., where a person can use Word long enough to type up a resume
and send it off to someone.
Why would a company want a Word attachment? Some large corporations (such
as Boeing and Microsoft in our area) put these resumes in a searchable
database. I suppose that some recruiters only have Word skills as well.
And, if a person is applying for a job as a technical writer, the ability to
adapt quickly to new software (such as Word) would be important.
