TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I wanted to bring up something related. I just finished a months-long job
hunt, and I found that some companies give you no option other than applying
online by pasting your resume into a response form (so they can easily get
it into their database). I didn't like this, mainly because it seemed to
prevent me from sending them a great cover letter.
Well, as I was feeding my resume into the response box, I realized that the
program didn't care about length. So I added my cover letter text at the
beginning, before the resume began.
And I made all possible attempts to improve formatting within the restraints
of ASCII text -- by first laying it out with optimal line length in Notepad,
checking and rechecking it, then just copying and pasting it all into the
online form.
The job I wanted more than any other required this method of response. I got
the job!
