The only salary cut I've had was when I moved from the oil business as a geologist/geophysicist for a small independent oil company to a software development company (being out of work for 9 months inbetween those 2 jobs). My salary at the time of my exit from the oil business was $75,000, plus bonuses, royalty interests, etc., which brought my compensation to around $100K. This was back in 1984-1986.

My job as a technical writer for a software company that developed geological and geophysical mapping software was $33,000 (in 1987). From that point until the present, I have always had salary increases when I moved from one job to another.
