What bothers me is not so much the justification for illegal activities,

constrained.

These are issues that everyone should be concerned about - even those whose views are nearly the opposite of mine, as Andrew's are :-)

However, a moment of historical perspective seems in order: the idea that business sometimes needs to be constrained isn't new. We haven't lived in a laissez-faire capitalist system for at least 150 years. Laws about working conditions, anti-trust laws and dozens of other restraints exist for the simple reason that wide open capitalism demonstrably did not provide a decent life for many people, and concentrated too much power in too few hands. Contrary to the current mythologies, we live in a mixed economic system in North American and Europe, and nobody is alive today who remembers a time when it was otherwise.

One of the results of this mixed system is that different groups are going to be constantly lobbying for their rights. In addition, upholding the rights of one group is almost always going to mean restricting the rights of other groups. Regardless of what anyone thinks of the issues, it's not too surprising that, after the pro-business Eighties and Nineties that other interest groups should be trying to curb business.
