The following is a list of word endings. I want to
rank-order these endings according to how frequently
each is likely to occur in a sample of documents.
* e * ed * er * es * ing * ingly * ly
--------
I can think of a brute force way to do it, assuming that you're operating or
can operate in Word, though it may turn out to be unworkable if your
document sample size is too large.
1. Take your document sample and make a copy as a Word document
2. Run Search+Replace All on the copy for each of your word endings,
*with a space after each ending*
3. Make a note of the number of times each word ending was replaced.
That won't pick up any examples where the word endings are immediately
before a comma, immediately before a full stop (period) or any other
punctuation mark. But it ought to give you a baseline, which will be
accurate more or less depending on the size of document sample on which you
are able to perform the S&R-A
You could also (step 1.5) run a Search and Replace All on the copy for each
punctuation mark, replacing each with a space. That should ensure that *all*
the words in the document are followed by a space, and would increase the
accuracy of Step 3.
