>1. Take your document sample and make a copy as a Word document
>2. Run Search+Replace All on the copy for each of your word endings,

>3. Make a note of the number of times each word ending was replaced.
Try this instead (apply to step 2 above):
(ed)> in the find and \1 in the replace. This will find all occurrances of
words ending in "ed" and replace them with the found text, thereby not
changing the document. Then substitute the next ending.
