Hi Jim,
The following solution is for Word 97...
When you define the heading style, pre-define headings with "Chapter" as a
bullet. You can do this by customizing the bullets and numbers.
In Bullets and Numbering screen, select the 'Customize' button. In the
'Number format' you can enter 'Chapter-' and this can be defined for heading
one.
Hence, whenever you select heading one style your header will appear as
follows:
Chapter-1 Master--------> heading one
Chapter-2 Transaction-->heading one, etc

After defining chapters as heading one, go to each chapter's first page and
view the header and footer. ||CAUTION: each chapter should be given a
Section Break and REMEMBER to disable 'same as previous' icon from the
'Header and Footer' menu list for each chapter(section) break.||

Select the 'Cross Reference' from the 'Insert' menu option. You will find
list of chapter numbers displayed with the heading names.
Select the chapter to be displayed; Select 'the Page Number' optin from the
"Insert reference to" dropdown field and click on the 'Insert' button.
You will find the chapter numbers alongwith page numbers.

With Warm Regards,
