Well John, I guess I also expressed that in my mail, didn't I. I did say it is a matter fo personality. It's like someone likes mother, whereas someone prefers the daughter :-)...

Different people look to their career for different things...you are
looking for the comraderie, fellowship, and emotional stability...It appears that you would be happiest in an environment where once a month, everyone gets together to roast marshmallows and sing Kumbaya.

I do like stability, also in my personal life - so it is a matter of personality; but I think loyalty is not something to be ashamed of! and I don't think there's nothing wrong with that. But the one thing I really am not looking for specifically are company get togethers. When I mentioned the function part in my mail, it was just an example. What I value in my job is that it is interesting and challenging. The job is important. Not whether or not there's the weekly get together or free sodas. I've also experienced that. And I like to separate my working time and free time. I like to choose the people I spend my freetime with. Saying that, it does not feel good either if you're left out on everything that goes on in the company. That does not give you a good feeling. But people are different.



I, on the other hand, am in it for the money

well I get a certain amount of money every month and nothing for the extra hours I put in so I guess our situation is a _bit_ different in that respect...

and because I like to do
things the way I want to do them.

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury to do that. Exactly that I cannot do in my present job. I worked for a single company before and had much more say in everything that I have now...

I have no patience for spending
hours with my management defining my Professional Development Plan
for the coming year


well we have to do that in our company anyway :-)

If I want training, I want the training that I want, not what my
company thinks will make me a greater asset.

We usually have a choice in this country (Finland) to choose which courses we want to take and when. And the employers usually are quite flexible. They have never forced me to take a course...


I use my own equipment and my own software...the stuff is pretty
SOTA...and because of that (among other factors), I'm more efficient
in what I do (my boss just thinks I'm better (shhhh...)

Well as I work for a subcontracting company and usually the companies that hire us are

At the same time, I'm recognized by some of the highest-positioned
people in my group...the boss of the boss of my boss (and he's pretty
high up himself) waves at me in the cafeteria and says hello by name
(BTW..the company is Fortune 500, so we're not talking about 100
total people).

In summary...different people want different things from their
job...

Here we agree 100%.

(The rest of the message I snipped because the tone of it came off to
me that YOU don't have the respect for contract writers that you want
the employer to have and if you don't show respect, you get none...
that's what you are experiencing.)

Sorry I didn't mean this...but it also seemed you couldn't have respect for my opinions. Everyone is entitled to have their own opinions and I don't see why people should get offended by them. I accept the fact that some people like subcontracting; and I specifically wanted to hear what other people think. Also, our countries have different kinds of working cultures etc. which affects this discussion.
