Hey, no sweat Rory. According to the Oxford Dictionary of
Quotations, the New Statesman article is the first official
*accreditation* ... I didn't say when it was published (I said I was a
smart*&ss!). The citation states that the saying was accredited to
Shaw in several forms, ... but it doesn't actually appear in any of
his published works.

Can I say "gotcha!" ? ... ;-)
