Help -- PaintShopPro files cannot be opened!

Hello, all - I'm hoping that you may have some insights into the bizarreness
I have encountered.

After capturing a series of screenshots in Jasc PSP 5.01 and saving them as
.GIF files, I tried to re-enter the files and print them for reference. I
was startled to receive the message that they were empty or could not be
opened. Their size, also, was odd for GIF files,  averaging 47 to 52 KB.

I repeated my usual process for creating them (ALT-PrtScr, open Painshop,
paste as new image, save) and obtained the same result when I closed the
file: suddenly it was empty and could not be reopened. File size was 47 KB.

Has anyone ever encountered this, and can you suggest any clues offline?
