RE: Hobbies on a resume

Regarding resume and hobbies.

I can see where some companies may not be interested in hobbies/interests
that you are a resume. However as most sales courses seem to focus on
becoming an individual to the people you are dealing with, and not a number,
so that some type of personal connection can be formed to make you stand out
from the crowd - then I believe hobbies/interests can be useful in this
manner.

Maybe this is a long bow I am drawing (so prepare to duck!), but all
industry/commerce/activity is based on human interaction - as we all know -
I hope - when we can identify with the person at the other end of a
computer/phoneline communication usually becomes better - and we can usually
abuse that connection in the most human ways possible to get better service
or a better deal. If you know where the itch is that they need scratching,
usually they will repay the compliment by scratching your itch.  

And in conclusion - if I can't/don't show interest in activities outside my
workplace it is unlikely I shall show much interest in work activities.

I have always listed my hobbies on my resume. Especially when working for a
large multi-national, these can be instantly used by the HR dept to point
you to folks with the same interests and involve you in their social club.
>From a professional POV, I think my listing of Writing, Reading, Bushwalking
(etc) says an awful lot about why I do what I do... ie I enjoy writing so I
work as such.
