Most of the programs I've worked on use this (dare I say it?)
paradigm. Me, I've about given up on finding the "right" or
"standard" terminology for this. I just refer to the left-hand pane and
the right-hand pane. If the pane is clearly labeled in some way, I
refer to it as "the <name of pane> pane". That way, I know (and my
reader knows) EXACTLY which part of the screen I'm talking about.
