I'd add Steve Krug to the list of good Web design and usability resources.
His book "Don't Make Me Think" raises some very valid points, and is a
very enjoyable read.

Like Arlen, I have difficulty taking Jakob Neilsen's advice seriously -
one look at his site (http://www.useit.com) makes me want to ignore his
advice, however valid much of it may be. YMMV.
