Well, yes, you can swap FrameMaker ASCII files (MIF) but I don't recommend
it. FrameMaker 6.0 (I don't think 6.1 exists) changes a very few things, but
these include adding the extremely useful <$chapnum> variable and also
changes to numbering chapters in general. This means, you'll probably have
to redefine the TOC and maybe index when you work in 5.x and then redefine
them again when the project comes back to 6.0. That is, I really don't
recommend roundtripping between FrameMaker 6 and FrameMaker 5.5.

Instead, pick one FrameMaker version for the project and stick to it.
FrameMaker 5.5.6 was a solid version, use it. Or, FrameMaker 6 is solid,
too, stick with that. And, consider that the upgrade from FrameMaker 5.x to
6.0 is only $225ish, that's the equivalent of, what, four or five hours of
labor by the contractor . . . somebody buy the upgrade.
