Sean is right on as usual. The long-term
cost-effectiveness of buying the upgrade definitely
makes more sense than going through a MIF exchange.

Another perspective:

The contractor might appreciate those added hours in
his/her bank account (and then could easily afford the
upgrade later).

But, what's the point here? To help the consultant
make more money, or to save money and get the job done
in the least amount of time?
