My last lay-off (earlier this year) was interesting. My lay-off was a
sensitive issue since: a) it was a small dot-com and b) my wife worked
there. Since I was being let go, and my wife wasn't, I was given a lot of
freedom that day that others were not. I was told to take my time, wander
around and say any good-byes that I wanted, and basically hang out until
lunch when my boss and I went for lunch.

My wife's boss (a great guy who was later let go hmself) told her to take
the afternoon off and go home with me.

The lay-off itself went very well, although the week leading up to it was
handled very poorly.
