The company I mentioned earlier took us all outside to pose for a group picture celebrating the completion of a major project five days before the first layoff (well, all except for my cube mate that got canned the next year because it was a Wednesday afternoon and he always snuck off to play golf). Those of us who were left all got plaques with the picture on it and we all realized that the timing was not a coincidence.

The company had a BBQ immediately afterward to "raise morale." I think it
was already shot after the 2 rounds of layoffs.
