Same sort of thing happened to a manager at a place I worked about two lifetimes ago. Came in one morning, and his card didn't work. Someone else coming in about the same time let him in. Didn't think anything about it, the security system was always doing weird crap. Then he couldn't log on to the network. Called the sysadmin, and that's how he found out he wasn't an employee anymore.

Of course, that company wrote the book on "heartless." We had an HR person, who was actually a nice guy, who was known as the Death Angel. Whenever he walked down the hall, no matter the reason, people cringed.
