TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Unions have, as somebody else already said, had a lot to do with the
working conditions etc that we currently have - things we now take for
granted. They served a useful purpose and still do in some areas (where
members are in low paid/low skill/etc jobs where they can't easily up
and go somewhere else.
Not really the case in the TW field. The problem with a lot of unions
(as with other organisations) is the people that run them - sadly we're
far from perfect and those that end up running unions are often those
with their own agendas, political or whatever. When I did Quality at
college one of the lecturers said that the aim of Quality Managers
should be to make themselves redundant. I think the same applies to
unions - once you have fair employment, pay etc then the union is
redundant and, if it still exists, it should be just 'ticking over' (at
minimal cost to members!)
