Ed Hawco wants to install Linux and is concerned about needing to
manually configure his machine...

<<I have the impression that you have to jump through a lot of hoops to
get a Linux box to work with garden-variety
(read: Windows-oriented) peripherals. Hopefully, I've been mislead.>>

You've been mislead. Or probably more accurately, things have changed
and you haven't heard the new news. It's likely that there are drivers
and the like for many of the peripherals you mentioned (not sure about
the Palm though).

I recently installed Linux Mandrake 8.0 on two machine (with different
hardware architectures) and the install auto-discovered everything
(including the old Bubblejet printer). The installs have come a long way
over the last couple of years. The first time I installed Linux I had to
manually configure many things. That has all changed. (Of course, I
still tweak and play with different settings, but it's because I want
to, not because I need to.)
