TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I don't know the student who asked the original
question. Since I always give people the benefit of
the doubt, I assume she's a good student.
But in Iggy's defense, there's a concern that people
often post questions to this listserv (and other
online forums) without having first done research on
their own. Again, giving the benefit of the doubt,
maybe they have. But they usually give no indication
of having done so. I'm sure each of us could think of
at least three or four frequently discussed topics
that could easily be found with a quick search of the
listserv archive or the Internet in general.
To be sure, consulting SME's is a valid way of
gathering information, but I always make a point of
preparing myself so that I don't waste their time. I'm
reminded of programmer humor: "I ran spellcheck on
your code and took out all those extra parentheses."
And I would never assume that a college student (nor
anyone else for that matter) knows how to do
well-rounded research.
