<tapping the mike> Is this thing on?

To answer a couple of Steve's questions:

Regarding SnagIt: There have been numerous posts about SnagIt, and one
can access them using the handy search feature at
http://www.raycomm.com/techwhirl/archives.html. I highly recommend the
archives. Lots of good stuff there. There are many archived posts
about the Word listserv, how to make a PDF from a Word doc (use Adobe
Acrobat), how to convert to Framemaker, what's a good screenshot
utility, etc. Another good resource, frequently mentioned here, is
www.google.com, which indexes a couple billion web pages and is
usually the quickest way to get an answer to any question. To earn
good karma as a list newbie, (1) search the archives, (2) search the
web, (3) if 1 and 2 fail, ask your question, and then (4) read the
replies closely and acknowledge them so that people know you're
listening.

Regarding tables in Excel: I wouldn't do it that way unless I needed
tables with mathematical formulas. Simple text tables or layout tables
are not difficult to do in Word.

Regarding cheap help authoring tools: You can make help files with
nothing more than Word and Microsoft's free Help Workshop, although
it's a lot faster to do it in RoboHelp.

Overall: tools tools tools... Tools are not the important part. There
are a couple of thought-provoking threads going on right now about
what things are REALLY important.

HTH,
Christine
