Where the heck are all the Canadian jobs? I did a search for tech writing
jobs this morning on Dice.com. The results were 1851 jobs in the U.S. and .

industrialized country. You would think there would be more demand for tech
writers than that. There must be a huge hidden job market here (I hope).

It can't be emphasized often enough: don't expect every job in an area to show up on the job boards. In fact, don't expect even most jobs to show up on the job board. That's always been true, and it's even truer than it was two years ago.

As you may remember, I'm in the same province as you, and none of my last five or six contracts were obtained by looking at a job board. None were even listed. I found them by looking at company web sites and making cold calls. Most potential employers simply aren't going through job boards these days. Many aren't even using head-hunters.

That's not to say that the job boards are completely useless. www.bctechnology.com has a good selection of jobs available in British Columbia. But I doubt that even half the available jobs are listed on it. Besides, any job that is widely advertised is going to have much more competition than a job you track down for yourself.

You would do far better to go the listing of companies on the site and visit each of their sites in your job search. www.bctia.org is another good site for company information, although it's not always up-to-date.

Contrary to popular wisdom, there are jobs out there for writers. No, not as many, not as high-paying, not as permanent, and maybe not as interesting as last year's. But they are there, especially if you have some experience. The only catch is that you have to do most of the work of finding them for yourself.
