Hello whirlers:
Please excuse my digest lag. I had to add my 2 cents to the training in
speaking thread. Maybe my experience is unique, maybe not. In high school
and college I had the usual public speaking courses, participated in class
debates, gave oral presentations, was in a couple of plays. I got through
them adequately, but that was about it. My real training was when I was a
waitress. Yes, I said waitress.
I was working my way through college at a very fine (3 star) Italian
restaurant in New Haven, Connecticut (500 Blake Street, still there, still
as good as ever). Reciting the specials every evening was required, groups
might range from 2 to 40 or more. If anyone has ever waited tables, or
tended bar, you know "witty repartee" sells, and earns. The turning point
for me came when I knew my lines inside and out; had it down to a "shtick".
I'm not normally an extrovert, but I learned to put on the mask, and know
how to use it to this day. Make some announcements to room of 300? No
problem? Crack a joke, fix a technical glitch? Sure!
Who says all the useful knowledge in the world comes from the ivy-covered
walls of academia?
