A very-well qualified programmer friend in his late forties was laid-off and
had no trouble getting first interviews, however, he never seemed to get the
second interviews.

So he covered most of the gray (except for a few touches around the
temples), and got second interviews at the next three places and two offers.

A lot of managers are uncomfortable managing people obviously older than
they.

Don't forget, subjective factors count in interviews.
