All this depends on what you want.

In March, I was at a gig doing $77/hr. The gig ended (the deliverable
got delivered). The positions available to me were being offered at
$38, $42, etc. I turned them down until something reasonable came
along. I accepted one at $55.

It all depends on what you think is reasonable and how much you
want/need to go back to work. It is also based on supply and demand.

There is no rule that says "Technical Writer gets $X" The rule says
"How much can I get away with?" If there are those with the right
qualifications out there willing to work at half the rate, then to
the client, more than that is paying too much. The trick is to make
them understand that what you have at a higher rate, they really need
and that the qualification of those accepting less are not in the
client's best interest.

How good a saleman are you? BTW...good luck and as they say "Don't
let them see you sweat"...make them think they need you more than you
need them.
