I think that we all have the tendency to think that the other person
"has it all together" and that they get "lucky".
I think this is an extremely important point. My own example is a writer who did over thirty novels before selling one. She's sold about a dozen now, including some collaborations with some well-known names.
When people ask her how she managed to become so successful, her reply is usually along the lines of, "Success? I've failed more times than almost anyone I know."
Of course, blind persistence isn't enough. Most of the time, you have to learn along the way, as well. But I've seen a couple of writers drift out of the field, not because of any lack of talent, but because they gave up the job search too easily.
